HUNTINGDON -- 6 News has an update on a story we've been following in Huntington County.
Ten dogs continue to recover after they were found living in filth.
The dogs were discovered during a drug bust in Mifflin County, but have been in the care of the Huntingdon County Humane Society.
According to volunteers at the Humane Society, when the dogs arrived they were in pretty rough shape.
"They were not in good condition at all. The puppies were in deplorable condition and we decided to do all we could, at the request of the DA, to help these puppies. And we brought them in and they have been under constant care," said Jinny Cooper, a volunteer with the Humane Society.
After $4,000 in veterinary care and lots of tender, loving care, the puppies are in good shape. They have been weaned from their mothers and are healthy enough to enjoy outside play time.
Yet, they can't be adopted.
"Our office this week is seeking a legal forfeiture of these dogs. There's a legal process we have to go through," said Huntingdon County District Attorney Dave Smith.
The dogs were rescued during a drug bust. A legal owner has the right to come forward but, according to the district attorney, no claims of ownership have been verified.
The district attorney said he is hopeful they will win this court battle.
In the meantime, the dogs will remain at the Humane Society, a large undertaking for this volunteer based shelter.
"It is all donations. We get no state, federal or county funding. It's been tough," said Cooper.
Legal proceedings are expected to last thirty days. If the district attorney wins, the Huntingdon County Humane Society will be able to find forever homes for the dogs.
In the meantime, the Humane Society is still asking for help to continue caring for the dogs.
